An explanation, a justification, an excuse…
My name is Alan.
I'm embarking on a journey, to be a bus driver.
I've had many jobs over the years. I've been a grave digger while I was at university. I've been an award-winning illustrative photographer. Most recently I was General Manager of Marketing at Sharesies. I've had great success at every job I've had.
Why bus driving? Well, if you read the other posts on Thanks, Driver you'll get a sense of my love of driving. Right here and right now, I have no idea if I'll enjoy this job or not. Having said that, I've done some research and I haven't met one bus driver who says they don't love their job. One of those people has been driving in Wellington for over 10 years.
So, I'm going into this with my eyes wide open. And I hope that I can bring you along on the journey, firstly with what I need to do to get the role, and then, hopefully, sharing better work stories as a Wellington bus driver.
Why this, why now
On 1 March 2023, I was made redundant. That day was the first day of a new life. What to do? Honestly, my days have been so full since I stopped ‘working’.
I have always hankered to be a bus driver, and I’m pretty confident that I’m going to have some good work stories. I’m keen to share that experience with you.
There will be occasional posts, as and when the muse takes me. Don’t expect daily stories. Just be excited when they arrive in your inbox.
I’m not looking to monetise this venture, but I also know that bus drivers aren’t paid well. If you feel compelled to hand over some of your hard-earned cash, then I’ll be very grateful. But you don’t need to. But, it would be nice. I’ll leave it up to you.
Welcome aboard! 🚌
